Nelson Algren Awards

The Nelson Algren awards are for short fiction. Stories must be unpublished. Length: 2,500 and 10,000 words. No entry fee. Top award: $5,000 prize and three runner-up prizes of $1,500 are awarded. This writing contest is sponsored by the Chicago Tribune.

Ohio State University Prize for Short Fiction

This annual award is given to the manuscript collection of short fiction selected by an independent judge to be the best submitted. Entry fee is $20. The winning author will receive $1,500 and publication of his/her entry. The winner and finalists will be announced in May.

Submissions will be made during the month of January, a change from previous years.

Submissions may include short stories, novellas, or a combination of both, but a single novella by itself is not an eligible submission. Previously published stories or novellas may be included in the manuscript. Manuscripts must be between 150 and 300 typed pages (approx. 40,000 to 80,000 words). Individual stories or novellas in the collection may not exceed 125 pages (approx. 35,000 words).

Glimmer Train Press

 

#1 . . . Standard story submissions

Glimmer Train wants original, unpublished short stories, 12,000 words maximum. No children’s stories, however. Submit on line, not via mail. Go to Glimmer’s web site to click into the process. Dates for submissions to this publication are January, April, July, and October. Response within 16 weeks. Pays $500 for first-publication rights. #2 . . . Glimmer Train’s Fiction Open

This is a contest, but has the same story guidelines as if you were submitting for publication. Submissions are online. Fee, $15 per story. First-pace winner gets $2,000 and publication in Glimmer Train Stories.

Dates for submission . . . May 1 - July 15. Results on October 15. Also November 1 - January 15. Results on April 10.

 

#3 . . . Gimmer Train’s Very Short Fiction Award

Original, unpublished very short stories submitted online for this contest cannot be longer than 2,000 words. Fee, $10 per story. First-pace winner gets $1,200 and publication in Glimmer Train Stories.


Dates for submission . . . Summer: June 1 - July 31. Results on November 1. Winter: November 1 - January 31. Results on May 1.

 

#4 . . . Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers

Original, unpublished short stories submitted online for this contest. Maximum length is 12,000 words. Fee, $12 per story. First-pace winner gets $1,200 and publication in Glimmer Train Stories.


Dates for submission . . . Spring: February 1 - March 31. Results on July 1. Fall: August 1 - September 30. Results on January 2nd.


Conferences and Seminars

 

The University of Wisconsin holds two superb conferences for writers each summer. If you want to check the value of attending, talk to alums of the conferences: Shel Ellestad, Carol Hornung, Chris Lacey, Jerry Peterson, Spike Pedersen, Roberto Palombi and Walter Simson.

 

The Writer’s Institute . . . March 27-29, 2009

This 3-day event will draw about 200 writers from around the Midwest.

This conference makes use of a headliner who is often worth the price of the entire conference. You also get to choose from a long list of sessions to sit in on. Additionally, you get to meet and pitch to agents and publishers.

One more reason to go for this conference -- the Page One and the Poem contests, your chance to win recognition for your writing.

Write-by-the-Lake Writer’s Retreat . . . June 15-29, 2009

Workshops in the morning, writing time in the afternoon.

WisCon

WisCon 33: May 22-25, 2009

The world's leading feminist science fiction convention. Writers from all over meet in Madison to attend this fantasy and science fiction conference. It includes panels which discuss techniques of writing and panels that discuss F/SF novels, television, and movies already created, analyzing what works and doesn't work. There is also the option of a writing workshop in small groups that include a professional writer. There are also great deals on books, an art fair, a bake sale, an auction, and more! Register early to ensure a spot.
