Fifth Tuesday Events

On the fifth Tuesdays, both the first-and-third group and the second-and-forth group get together for a Tuesdays with Story social. Usually it is a potluck at someone's house or a public place. Each time, the writing challenge is different.

September 30, 7pm

Writing Challenge: Foodies unite! Write a short-short story -- any genre -- poem or essay of fewer than 400 words in which food is a major ingredient.

Would ANY “Tuesdays” writer, or wannabe or guest intentionally miss a FIFTH TUESDAY ?
Especially THIS one with its fun challenge or all foodiesor eaters. I mean, you can write ANYthing you want about food AND…
you can sit and enjoy DELICIOUS POTLUCK FOOD with interesting (if sometimes strange) friends.
Of course there’ll be sinful and gooey desserts, wines & sodas, spicy and mild,
gloppy and crispy, rolled and bowled, hot and cold, genuinely-scrumptilishious dishes. There’ll be laughter and tears from stories and poems read aloud to boisterous applause.

And NO WORK or critiquing to do.
Just fun, food and friends at:

FIFTH TUESDAY

A Guide to Unique Places (download)

This publication is a guide to those small corner bars, hidden rural nightspots and hard to find urban watering holes that are found in every corner of Wisconsin. With our rich tradition of alcoholism, ethnic diversity, regional dialects and town characters, Wisconsin has fostered a hundred places that are hard to imagine, but now, easy to visit!

We have sent out intrepid explorers with notepads and I-books to ferret out the most interesting, unusual and unsung places in the state where you can legally alter your mind and liver. They have reported back from every corner and county to help us compile this guidebook.

The book is divided into sections by regions: The southeast where urban ethnic bars still serve goulash with dark rye. The North where the woodsman and lumberjack tradition survives and even flourishes. The Northwest where deep woods and Norwegians produce places featuring lutefish, lefsa, and very polite depression. The South where liberal Madison bars insist on their own version of reality and Janesville bars try to avoid it. The Southwest, the oldest part of the state, where the traditions of lead mining and strong drink first took root in our native soil.

We'll look in turn at various establishments, tell you how to find them, what makes them special, what food and drink is particular to them, and what memorable personage you may chance to meet. So open the next page, and get drunk on the culture of Wisconsin Taverns, Dives and Watering Holes.

Featuring: Marnie Schulenburg, Jim Cue, Rebecca Rettenmund, John Schneller, Spike Pederson, Jerry Peterson, Cathy Riddle, Jack Freiburger, Terry Hoffman, Mindy Habecker, Karen Zethmayr, Ruth Smelser, Thomas Jannusch, Carrie Greenquist-Peterson, Bill Dries, Sarah Miller, Donna Coughlin
